Our Mission

The Project

In July of 2009, we volunteered to survey land for the construction of an orphanage in Zoranger, a small farming community in rural Haiti. During the trip, we were surprised to learn that the community's nearest water source was a low-flowing stream located several miles from the village. Upon further investigation, we found the stream itself was highly contaminated by both chemical runoff and animal feces. It was also clear the daily task of retrieving water, predominantly done by women and children, interfered with participation in other community activities, including attending school.

According to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), Haiti has the highest rates of infant mortality in the Western Hemisphere. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 28% of child deaths under the age of five are attributable to poor sanitation and unsafe water.

Project Goal

Our Goal is to build a centrally located well and storage cistern to alleviate the burdensome task of transporting water from Zoranger's current water source.

We have partnered with community leaders to ensure the wells are maintained and will provide sustained access to safe drinking water. A local well driller has provided a cost estimate of $15,000 for installation of the well including a pump, and construction of a storage cistern. We aim to raise this amount through a combination of grass roots and formal fund raising methods.
